In order to decommission the whole site at Dounreay, preparatory
work had been carried out to assay the nuclear waste generated by
sequential decommissioning of individual facilities. The facilities
have been studied and a report produced detailing the most
suitable, safe and cost-effective way of returning the site to
brown-field status. Mott MacDonald was charged with the study of
two such facilities.

We completed the study in accordance with a strict
site-specified programme, reporting via site presentations and
discussion at regular intervals during the task. This contract was
a preparatory step in the decommissioning of the Dounreay site in
accordance with the government’s stated objectives.
Mott MacDonald provided services to the D2700 Cementation Plant,
Interim Drum Store and Drum Store Extension and these
included:
- review of plant description documents, design documents and
building drawings
- preparations for walkdown inspections
- plant walkdown inspections to examine the safety structures,
systems and components (SSSC), identified on an engineering
schedule resulting from HAZOP/HAZAN process, to determine
integrity, condition, performance, threats to performance and other
factors having significance to safety
- production of walkdown report
- attendance at meeting to review and discuss differences between
entries in the engineering schedule and findings during the
walkdown inspections
- engineering assessment of the SSSCs to levels appropriate to
their safety classification in the engineering schedule
- production of Engineering Substantiation Reports (ESRs) – one
for each of six disciplines
- attendance of meetings with UKAEA operational staff and with
IPR staff to discuss comments on the ESRs
